ELIZABETH

Elizabeth opened her eyes. Or did she? A moment, and her dreams, hopes and fears created a whole of the total of their parts and delivered a mental synergy. A second, and the moon and stars aligned to her cerebral solar system. White and grey matter united in light and compiled to operate as a single computational algorithm, analysing and harmonising, checking and balancing, simplifying problems and generating solutions.

Clarity delivered confidence and when sleep returned over an hour later it was a slumber not disturbed by tossing, turning and halted breaths.

The phone startled her awake.

“Hello…”

“When are you coming home…?”

“Sydney, is everything okay?”

Elizabeth rubbed her eyes alert to the day.

“No… nothing’s okay. When are you coming home? Dad’s so upset.”

“I am coming home. I promise. Just give me a few more days.”

“He doesn’t want a divorce, he told me.”

“Well, it’s a pity he hasn’t told me!” She paused just as her phone alarm alerted her to the start of her day: ‘The sun has got its hat on…’ “Sorry, sorry.” She suppressed the tune. “Look, how about I take you for pizza later? I’ll pick you up around 5:30.”

She could smell cooking bacon and hear her mother singing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ Wide awake now, she half fell out of the single bed; hunted for her red slippers – a Christmas present from Sydney – retrieved them from under the bed and then unhooked her white cotton dressing gown from behind the door. She wrapped it around herself and was about to head for the door when she turned to look at the picture above her bed. The frame was the same as it had been yesterday, rubbed gilt giving it a worn look, but the quote was different. She smiled to herself as she read ‘There’s No Place Like Home’.

“Morning!” Her mother turned and sang at her as she entered the kitchen. “And how are you feeling today?”

Elizabeth went and sat at the table, a move perfectly synchronised with the hand-delivered meat-free cooked breakfast placed in front of her.

“Sleep well?” Demelza asked.

“Really good, thanks,” Elizabeth replied, picking up her knife and fork in readiness. “Is there something you’d like to tell me?”

“There’s lots I’d like to tell you, dear. Did you have anything particular in mind?”

“The quote above my bed?”

“Oh that. It’s wonderful, isn’t it?” Demelza smiled as she spoke. “And so true.”

“Have I outstayed my welcome?”

“No, of course not, dear - don’t be silly. I just thought a gentle reminder might help you focus on what’s important…” Demelza was about to return to the cooker but instead stopped to look at her daughter.

“Are you feeling any better?”

“Yes, I am,” Elizabeth said while assembling a perfectly apportioned mouthful of one third mushroom, one third egg and one third beans onto her fork. “Sorry about the last few days,” she said before devouring her designer forkful and returning it to her plate in readiness for a rebuild.
